Obituary of Beatrice Phillips
“Bea, GMA”
November 25, 1927 – October 22, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Beatrice Phillips, affectionately known as Bea, Aunt Bea, and most lovingly GMA who entered eternal rest on October 22, 2024, at the age of 96. A pillar of strength, grace, and love, Beatrice’s life was a beautiful testament to faith, family, and community.
Born on November 25, 1927, Beatrice lived independently, proudly maintaining her home in Washington, DC, for over 50 years. Her home at 426 was a sanctuary filled with love, laughter, and warm meals that nourished both body and soul. No one left her doorstep without comfort—whether it was fried fish, sloppy joes, or her delicious tarts made to celebrate birthdays and special occasions, making each loved one feel cherished.
Faith was the cornerstone of Beatrice’s life. Through every season, she leaned on God’s grace, setting an example of unwavering faith and humility. She found joy in gospel music and drew strength from prayer, guiding her family with wisdom and compassion.
A devoted mother and proud grandmother, Beatrice poured her heart into her family, showing up for every sporting event, school plays, or family celebrations. She was always in the stands or along the sidelines, cheering her grandchildren on with pride. Beatrice was a talented athlete, playing softball in her younger years and shining in the bowling leagues across the DMV. With a remarkable 185 bowling average, she was known not only for her skill but for the joy she brought to the lanes.
Her professional career was equally remarkable. Beatrice dedicated over 20 years to the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1987. She later embraced new roles in home healthcare and as an administrative assistant, greeting residents and guests with her signature warmth until her final retirement in 2010. Her life exemplified dedication, service, and hard work—values she instilled in her children and grandchildren.
The holiday season held a special place in Beatrice’s heart, especially when her birthday coincided with Thanksgiving. A self-taught seamstress, she adorned her windows with handmade drapes and baked her signature butter-glazed rolls. The end of the year meant waxed floors, fresh paint, and Lou Rawls or Ray Charles playing in the background, creating cherished memories for her family.
Beatrice was the beloved daughter of Raymond and Julia Denny and the eldest sister among fifteen siblings. She is survived by her siblings Carletta, Laurine (George), Pat, and Donald (Phyllis). She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Harold, Frank, Raymond Jr., Vivian, Louise, Cliff, Norman, Clark, Nancy, and Clyde. Though her heart ached with the loss of her only son, Beatrice found strength in her faith.
Remembering Our Brother, Our Mother's Son, James (Jay) Lorenzo Dial, Jr
(July 10, 1954 - January 15, 1971)
Jay was Bea’s only son. At the time of his death, he was a student at Wakefield High School. He was a high school athlete playing football, basketball, and a member of the wrestling team. He also loved playing his drums in the basement. Our beloved brother will live in our hearts forever—and ever. He was taken away from us, but we have always held a special place in our hearts for him that will forever be filled with our loving memories—memories that no one can take from us.
Take care of Mom, Jay. We Love and Miss You Both,
Your Loving Sisters.
Now, in eternal peace, Beatrice is reunited with Jay in a heavenly embrace. She leaves behind a legacy of love in her children: Denise, Paula, Lisa, Bonita, and Rayette, and in her grandchildren: Kia, Renard, Brent, Lorie, Lloyd, Alan, Riah, Markel, Robert, and Leslie. Her great-grandchildren—T. Lorenzo, Makenzie, Damani-Charles, Keagan, Zsa Cherie, Kayden, and Mare—brought her endless joy, and their visits filled her later years with laughter and light.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, condolences, and support during this time. Your kindness has been a source of comfort and strength.
Beatrice’s life was a remarkable journey of faith, love, and service. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. As Ray Charles beautifully expressed, “Rain may fall, but I’ll be there with you.”
