Obituary of Emma Hopkins Finney
Emma Hopkins Finney affectionately known as “Porky” was born January 7, 1941, in Quincy, Florida. She was the eldest of ten.
Emma Hopkins Finney affectionately known as “Porky” was born January 7, 1941, in Quincy, Florida. She was the eldest of ten (10) children born to L.C., Sr. and Emma Sherman. Emma was raised in Quincy, Florida and matriculated through Carter Paramore High School. She accepted Christ as a teenager, attending Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Quincy, Florida where she was Baptized in the “Traditional Baptist Way”, in a pond on Beavers Farm.
Emma met and married John Hopkins, Jr. and through their union, they were blessed with three beautiful daughters Brigette, Tee and Jackie. Emma loved her daughters and worked hard to create better opportunities for her children.
In 1962, they decided to relocate to Washington, DC, where Emma was employed as a Hostess on Bolling Air Force Base. She then shifted careers where she was employed at Kastle Systems as a Computer Security Specialist until she retired.
Emma and Linwood Edward Finney met while working at Bolling Air Force Base where they became good friends and this friendship blossomed into a twenty-six year marriage until God called him home in 2013.
In the 1970’s, she joined Randall Memorial Baptist Church (New Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church) . She was a faithful member of the church and attended Sunday school and Bible Study. Emma served as Chairperson of the Deaconess Board and she became a Deacon in 2005.
Emma was truly a blessing to her family. She was a daughter, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a great grandmother. Emma was also, a mother and friend to others outside of her family. She supported them as if they were her own children. She also enjoyed family gatherings especially with her two sisters, Pastoria Tripp and Sharon McGee. She will be sadly missed, but lovingly remembered. Emma Lived Her Best Life!
On December 15, 2021, Emma entered into eternal rest in the Arms of Our Lord. She was proceeded in death by her parents, L.C., Sr. and Emma Sherman, and her beloved husband Linwood Edward Finney. Emma leaves to cherish her memories three daughters, Brigette Hopkins, Teresa “Tee” Hopkins, and Jacqueline “Jackie” Hopkins. Grandchildren, Wendell Horton, Jr., Kenneth Teasley, Jr., John Mclean, Jr., Chanta’ Stewart, Patrice Pride, and Jasmine Pride. Eighteen great grandchildren, 5 sisters Pastoria Tripp (Thurman-Deceased), Patsey Davis, Sharon McGee, Devora Moye, Linda Oliver (Clifford) and 4 brothers L.C. Sherman, Jr.-Deceased, John Sherman, Sr. (Edna Mae), Carlton Sherman, Michael Sherman and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
