Obituary of Allen Samuel Barbour

Allen S. Barbour, Sr. was born in Fairfax, VA., on May 30,

1933 to the late Ray and Edith Barbour, Sr. He was the

second of sixteen children from their union. As a child Allen

attended Fairfax County Public Schools and even served as

the school bus driver during his senior year in high school.

He enjoyed fishing, football and especially watching

westerns.

 

From an early age he accepted Christ and at the age of 15 he

joined the Second Baptist Church of Clifton, Virginia.

Under the leadership of the late Rev. Higgans he was a

charter member and remained faithful in his service to the

church for many years. Allen was an unwavering soldier for

the Lord; singing with the “Swan Silver Tones” quartet,

working as a Sunday School teacher, later becoming

superintendent of the Sunday School Union as well as

accepting the calling to become ordained as Deacon Allen

Barbour.

As a young man at the age of 20, he enlisted in the United

States Army and three years later in 1956 married the love

of his life; Lucretia Harris. Their marriage was blessed with

six children: Calvin, Charlene, Allen Jr., Kenneth, Anthony,

and Stefon. Deacon Barbour was a loving man with a big

heart for everyone and he cherished his children,

grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, and

nephews.

 

Providing for his family was one of Deacon Barbour’s

greatest joys. For thirty years he worked for Fairfax County

Public Schools and Giant Foods. After retiring, he

volunteered his time to Fairfax County Public Schools as a

bus aide and continued on in his calling to serve the Lord.

 

As a retiree, Deacon Barbour devoted his time and energy to

serving the Baptist community at-large. In addition to

serving at Second Baptist Church as president of the men’s

fellowship and leading parking crew ministry efforts on

many occasions, he was also a delegate for the Northern

Virginia Baptist Association, a member of the VBSC

Layman’s League, Fairfax Central Sunday School Union

and the Lott Carey National Baptist Convention. Everyone

in the area could attest that Deacon Barbour as a fervent

devotional leader in both song and prayer and would gladly

usher in the Holy Spirit through worship and praise.

 

He was a humble, passionate, gentleman that always put the

Lord first. He was dedicated, loyal and committed to his

church and his family. Deacon Barbour was proceeded in

death by his wife Lucretia, sons Stefon and Kenny along

with his grandsons Jermaine and Ashante’, brothers Lee,

William, Paul, Clyde, and Ray, and his sisters Louise, Helen,

Mary, Sandra, Betty, and Arlene.

 

He leaves to cherish his memories four devoted children

Calvin (Wanda) Barbour, Charlene (Roger) Powell, Allen

(Joyce) Barbour, Jr., Anthony Barbour. He is also survived

by 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 4 great -great-

grandchildren, his brothers Glenn and James Barbour, his 

sisters Margaret Diamond, and Carolyn Scriber and

numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many

special friends.
