Obituary of Eva Conyer
Obituary
Eva Laverne Miller Conyer was born on December 27, 1955, daughter of the late Robert L. and Bernice E. Miller of Arlington, VA. Eva departed this life surrounded by loving family in Oklahoma City, OK, on January 15, 2023.
Eva attended Drew Elementary School, Hoffman-Boston Junior High School and Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA. Eva was an excellent student and an award winning athlete. She won numerous state championships in track for Wakefield High School and was a member of the girls’ basketball team. Eva was an outstanding tennis player and an outstanding swimmer. She loved all sports, especially football, and the Washington Commanders.
Eva was active in Lomax AME Zion Church. She sang in the children’s choir, the Lomax youth choir and she faithfully served on the junior usher board. Additionally, she was active in the church Sunday School, the Christian Endeavor, and the Buds of Promise. Whether in school, church or on Pollard Street, where the family lived, Eva’s kindness, warm smile and generosity of spirit led to her forming lifelong friendships. During her childhood, Eva’s love of animals became evident – and their love of Eva. Over the years, varieties of dogs and fish, and a bird named Skittles, found a loving home with Eva.
Upon graduation from Wakefield High School, Eva joined the United States Army. Her first assignment was in Thailand and soon thereafter the Philippines. During a 15 year Army career, Eva attained the rank of E-5 Sergeant, was with the 7th RRFS, and was stationed in Germany, Japan, Korea and in the United States. She received numerous awards: the National Defense Medal, the Army Accommodation Medal, four Good Conduct Medals, the Army Achievement Medal and a Sharpshooter Medal. Eva was a dedicated member of the United States Army. Among her various tours of duty, she particularly enjoyed Germany and Japan.
Following her honorable discharge from the military, Eva started a new career in the catering business. She enjoyed working for Magnolia Catering, preparing meals for gatherings large and small, formal and informal. During her time away from work, Eva treated family and friends to many new delicious recipes.
Over the years, Eva resided in Arlington, Virginia, Woodbridge Virginia, Temple Hills, Maryland, and Yukon, Oklahoma. Regardless of the location, Eva enjoyed being at home, with space to relax outdoors and comfortable places indoors to enjoy good food, conversation and laughter with family and friends. Although health challenges emerged in her later years, Eva’s indomitable spirit enabled her to fight on.
Eva deeply loved her family and friends and leaves to mourn and cherish her memory three children: Danielle Hollars (Tony), Robert Conyer, and Trent Singleton; grandchildren Déna Conyer, Brandon, Renee, Sarah, Damian, Naomi, Isaac, Gianna and Gabrielle Hollars, River Conyer, and Trenity Singleton; beloved sister Patricia Ann Miller; cousins Lillian Jones (Eleazar), and Diane Jones, and extended family; former husband Stanley Conyer; special friends Marionne Walls-Forte, Sandra Johnson, Estelle Washington, Frank Johnson, Wanda Congo, Sandra Fuller, and Kathy Boheim; and the many friends whose hearts she touched over the years.
We will take solace in knowing that Eva has gained sweet peace.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7
